The computer. This is the main system that will allow the processing of the connection and the call. The computer has to be configured to be compatible with the broadband Internet connection since a dial up connection will never allow a clear transition of the voice calls.

The sound card. For the clarity of both the voice and hearing, a sound card is necessary. This may be replaced however with a phone adapter or an IP phone. Apart from this, you will have a need for a microphone for the purposes of dialing and then talking.

The VoIP provider. The Internet is the best source of what services may be availed of. It is important to get the services of a reputable company. The installation of the software is also a less complicated thing to do.

The adapter. This equipment allows the flow of the connection between your computer and a regular phone.

The Pros of the Equipment

With a broadband Internet connection, you are able to save more money because you can make use of your old conventional phone and get on with placing local and international calls hassle-free.

You may keep in touch with your friends and loved ones wherever in the world they may be as long as they have an access to a reliable Internet connection.

The VoIP telephone system has done great wonders in keeping things easy especially with the monthly telephone bill.

Hamilton takes pole for F1 Australian GP

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Lewis Hamilton led a McLaren one-two Saturday by claiming the pole position for Formula One's season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

Hamilton qualified in 1 minute, 24.922 seconds around the Albert Park circuit, one-tenth of a second ahead of teammate Jenson Button, while Lotus' Romain Grosjean was a surprise third.

Mercedes' Michael Schumacher qualified fourth, ahead of the Red Bull pair of Mark Webber and reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel.

It was a dismal day for Ferrari, with Fernando Alonso spinning off into a gravel trap early in session two and qualifying in 12th place, while Felipe Massa fared even worse, qualifying 16th.

Comeback driver Kimi Raikkonen also disappointed, qualifying 18th for Lotus.

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg qualified seventh, Williams' Pastor Maldonado an impressive eighth, Nico Hulkenberg was ninth for Force India and Toro Rosso's Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the top 10.

Hamilton's pole was the 20th of his career, making him the 13th man in F1 history to reach that mark and moving him even with Alonso and Damon Hill on the all-time list. It was also the first all-McLaren front row since 2009.

"It's a fantastic feeling to be back here, and it's an incredible start to the season," Hamilton said.

"It was a tremendous job from the team to get us to this point. We've had a couple of tough years, but we never seem to give up."

Four of the past five winners in Melbourne have started from pole position, boosting Hamilton's hopes going into Sunday's race.

Button said he was "quite surprised" by the gap of about two-thirds of a second back to the Red Bulls after Vettel dominated last season.

"Red Bull are always competitive, we should never forget that, but we are going to enjoy this and hope we have a great race," Button said.

Grosjean's third place was the shock result in his first time at the Albert Park circuit. The Frenchman was expected to spend the season in the shadow of Raikkonen, but the 2011 GP2 champion showed he had put behind him his troubled time in F1 in 2009.

"A few people believed in me in the toughest times and today I am back almost at the top," Grosjean said.

Pin one up for copyright protection | New Jersey Business Law ...

The up-and-coming social networking site Pinterest has announced a new initiative to protect intellectual property from copyright infringement. The service, which is essentially a virtual bulletin board, allows members to post links, pictures and other information on a personalized page. This format has raised concerns about copyright protection because the site may encourage unauthorized sharing.

The co-founder of the site said this week that Pinterest respects the rights of intellectual property holders, and as a result has provided a new method for protecting information from being posted on the site. A short line of code, provided by Pinterest, will prevent information on any website from being posted to an online profile. Instead, the user will see a message indicating that the site's owners have chosen to be excluded. In addition, Pinterest administrators have developed an online form that can be used to request information removal.

Pinterest is a rapidly growing phenomenon, featuring more than 11.7 million users as of the last count in January. That's about 4 million more than the 7.5 million users in December, according to estimates.

Legal analysts say that the site treads a fine line between copyright protection and free speech. Courts are unlikely to prohibit the expression of free speech, say some attorneys, although the issue becomes convoluted when the law is also expected to protect business entities. Pinterest would be wise to demonstrate allegiance with copyright holders to prevent devastating legal action against the site, say media law experts. Outside experts argue that Pinterest can probably protect itself from copyright cases by demonstrating that the distribution of copyrighted material was not the site's primary function, unlike the processes that brought about the demise of such sites as Napster.

Nestl? chocolate promotion tastes sweet ... - Food and Drink News

Payne?s Supastrip VDP tear tape has been used by Nestl? to deliver a unique number on-pack promotion for Mexico?s leading chocolate bar brand.

The three-month promotion for Nestl??s Carlos V? brand was carried on 53 million chocolate bars and centred on helping the brand?s famous ?King Carlos V? character find his ?lost? crown.

Each bar featured a special 3mm tape which provided consumers with a unique code, printed in a high-contrast black text on a yellow background design. The tapes were applied to the inside of the wrapper, to be viewed after opening, combining a sense of anticipation and excitement with convenient easy opening.

Customers registered the code by SMS or online to earn ?chocolate money?, which could then be ?spent? on prizes ranging from ringtones and online games to games consoles, bicycles, mobile phones, TVs and tablet computers.

Aura Sanchez, Carlos V? brand manager from Nestl? Mexico, confirms: ?We are seeing record breaking results from the Carlos V? campaign with all targets being broken. As the code is on the Payne tape, the promotion is placed directly into the consumer?s hands at the time of opening, making it easy to find and contributing towards the success of this campaign.

?As well as being an ideal way to deliver the promotion, the printed tape from Payne has helped us further drive brand loyalty.?

Payne?s Supastrip VDP (variable data print) uses the latest digital print technology to create colourful, eye-catching designs and this promotion marks the first time Payne?s Supastrip VDP tape has been used on a flow-wrapped chocolate bar.

Tadeu Margaria, General Manager ? Latin America for Payne, explains: ?Payne?s printed message and tear tape solutions offer unrivalled opportunities to combine enhanced branding and communication with ease of use.

?The tear tape not only provides easy opening and tamper evidence, but also ensures the code is at the consumer?s fingertips for entering promotions, providing a valuable tool for brands to engage with their consumers.?

Payne tape can be applied without affecting production line speed and can be run across multiple stock-keeping units (SKUs). In this case, five different SKUs under the Carlos V? brand were included in the promotion.

?We are extremely pleased to have been able to provide Nestl? with a solution for this exciting promotion? Margaria concludes. ?We look forward to discussing further projects with Nestl? in the future?.

Afghan villagers recount shooting spree that left 16 dead; US soldier remains in custody

BALANDI, Afghanistan - As bullets flew, the Afghan woman scooped up her 3-year-old niece and ran for their lives. Moments later, the woman was dead and the girl lay bleeding from a gunshot wound.

It was the closing scene of a massacre that left 16 civilians, including nine children, dead in two villages in southern Kandahar province.

The U.S. is holding an Army staff sergeant that military officials say slipped off a U.S. base before dawn Sunday, walked to the villages, barged into their homes and opened fire. Some of the corpses were burned. Eleven were from one family. Five other people were wounded.

The military said Tuesday there was probable cause to continue holding the soldier, who has not been named, in custody. U.S. Secretary of Defence Leon Panetta has said he could face capital punishment.

Villagers ? angry at foreign troops, frustrated with their government and tired of war ? recounted the tragedy to a delegation sent to the scene by President Hamid Karzai. Two who lost relatives insisted that not one ? but at least two ? soldiers took part in the shootings.

President Barack Obama pledged a thorough investigation, saying the U.S. was taking the case "as seriously as if it was our own citizens, and our children, who were murdered."

In Afghanistan's first significant demonstration since the killings, protesters in the east burned an effigy of Obama as well as a cross, which they used as a symbol of people ? like many Americans ? who are Christians. They also called for the death of the soldier who has been accused.

On Tuesday, there was even more gunfire in Balandi, the village where 12 civilians were killed.

Taliban insurgents opened fire from behind some trees at members of the delegation, including two of Karzai's brothers. One Afghan soldier died of a gunshot wound to the head, while Afghan security forces returning fire killed three militants. Delegation members escaped unharmed.

Sunday's shooting rampage began in Balandi, a village about 1.5 kilometres (nearly a mile) south of the base.

Mohammad Wazir told the delegation that he was out of town when 11 of his relatives were slain at his house about 2:30 a.m. Someone called him in Spin Boldak, where he works as a farmer, and he hurried home to Panjwai district.

He said his sister told him that she heard gunfire and saw at least two soldiers firing inside their walled compound before she ran to hide in the kitchen of her uncle's home nearby.

"Everybody was shouting," Wazir said his sister told him. "My mother was in the yard closest to the Americans. They shot and killed her."

"My brother was shouting, 'Why are you shooting?' and they killed him," Wazir said. "Everybody was running in different directions. The children were running in one direction. The women were running in another direction, but they kept shooting."

When his sister emerged from her kitchen hideout, 11 members of Wazir's family were dead: his wife, mother, two sons, three daughters, his brother and sister-in-law, a nephew and a niece. Pieces of burned blankets were found near the bodies.

"My sister said that not only had they killed my family members, but they burned their bodies," Wazir said.

Members of the delegation said another man was killed inside his home in the village. They did not provide details of his death.

After the killings in Balandi, south of the base, four other people were gunned down in the village of Alkozai, about 1 kilometre (less than a mile) north of the base.

Sayed Jan said he was in the nearby city of Kandahar where he does construction work when the shooting occurred shortly before 3 a.m. at his house in Alkozai. He told the delegation that his cousins next door saw two men enter the house and gun down four people. The cousins ran to safety.

"First they killed my sister-in-law, then a brother," Jan told the delegation of Afghan security officials and lawmakers. "Then they killed another brother and then another sister-in-law."

Jan's 3-year-old daughter, who was in the arms of one of his sisters-in-law, survived. Jan, a widower, hasn't been able to see his daughter, who was taken to an international military coalition hospital at Kandahar Air Field, 65 kilometres (40 miles) northeast of the villages.

"They were running away and she was shot and injured," Jan said.

Marine Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, said Monday in Washington that an Afghan soldier on guard duty reported seeing a U.S. soldier walk off the base. That report prompted a head count, which revealed that the staff sergeant was missing. A search party was organized, but others on the base could not find the missing soldier before the attacks occurred, Allen said.

Panetta said the soldier returned to the base on his own, told others what he had done and turned himself in.

Members of the Afghan delegation investigating the killings said one Afghan guard working from midnight to 2 a.m. saw a U.S. soldier return to the base around 1:30 a.m. Another Afghan soldier who replaced the first and worked until 4 a.m. said he saw a U.S. soldier leaving the base at 2:30 a.m. It's unknown whether the Afghan guards saw the same U.S. soldier.

If the gunman acted alone, information from the Afghan guards would suggest that he returned to base in between the shooting sprees.

"We're still investigating and looking at evidence, but right now everything points to one shooter," said Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition in Kabul.

Villagers also reported seeing helicopters circling Balandi the night of the shooting. They gave members of the delegation empty canisters that the choppers had dropped to illuminate the area. Helicopters ferried the injured to Kandahar Air Field.

Cummings said there were no combat or close air support operations in the two villages at the time of the shootings.

Col. Gary Kolb, a spokesman for the U.S.-led military coalition in Kabul, said a 48-hour probable cause assessment was completed and that the service member continues to be confined.

U.S. officials have identified him as a married, 38-year-old father of two who was trained as a sniper and recently suffered a head injury in Iraq.

A senior military official said investigators are looking into the possibility that alcohol played a role.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is under way, said it's unclear whether the suspect had been drinking before disappearing from his base or whether alcohol was simply found in his living space there. Military rules prohibit the use or possession of alcohol in a war zone.

At the White House, a stern Obama said "we will make sure that anybody who is involved is held fully accountable with the full force of the law."

The anger among Balandi residents was on display Tuesday.

"Today, the Kandahar governor was trying to explain to the villagers that he was only one soldier, that he was not a sane person and that he was sick," said Abdul Rahim Ayubi, a Kandahar lawmaker who was in Balandi with the delegation.

"But the people were just shouting and they were very angry. They didn't listen to the governor. They accused him of defending the Americans instead of defending the Kandahari people," Ayubi said.

The Taliban attack came as members of the government delegation left a village mosque where a memorial service was being held for the victims.

Shots were fired just as Qayum and Shah Wali Karzai, two of the president's brothers, and other top Afghan officials were leaving the mosque. They were unharmed.

Before they left, the delegation members started to pay out compensation to relatives of victims ? $2,000 for each death and $1,000 for each person wounded.

The gunbattle came as images of the aftermath of the killings spread across the country, and the public reaction ? which at first seemed surprisingly muted ? began to build. Photographs of dead toddlers wrapped in bloody blankets in Panjwai started to make the rounds in Afghanistan on Monday. The images were broadcast on Afghan TV stations, and people posted them on social network sites and blogs.

Students in Jalalabad protested the killings, raising concerns about a repeat of the wave of violent demonstrations that rocked the nation after last month's burning of Qurans by troops at a U.S. base. Students shouted "Death to America!" and, "Death to the soldier who killed our civilians!"

"The reason we are protesting is because of the killing of innocent children and other civilians by this tyrant U.S. soldier," said Sardar Wali, a university student. "We want the United Nations and the Afghan government to publicly try this guy."

    Fukushima Anniversary: We Listen Back

    More Science Talk

Scientific American editor David Biello takes us through newly released audio from the first week of the nuclear meltdown crisis at Fukushima Daiichi.

"This is Mike Weber. We received a cable through international programs which came from the Ambassador in Vienna, and we just want to alert you to this, not that you need to do anything with the information, but to make certain that you have awareness of it."

Mike Weber is with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the NRC. And that's him on March 11, 2011, a year ago today, informing his colleagues at the agency that a nuclear accident is brewing in Japan following the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami. This recording and the others that followed come from those released by the NRC in the wake of multiple Freedom of Information Act requests. Weber went on:

"It's a brief cable that summarizes the current perspective of the International Atomic Energy Agency with respect to the situation of nuclear power plants in Japan.

And there is some somewhat alarming language that talks about, and I'll just quote 'the IAEA tells us the earthquake triggered a power failure at the Fukushima Daiichi unit 2 nuclear power plant, and then when a backup generator also failed, the cooling system was unable to supply water to cool the reactor.

Specialists at the IAEA understand the fuel core is still covered by water, but they question if it will remain so.'"

In fact, there would be at least three meltdowns at Fukushima Daiichi before it was all over. The crisis ultimately required the potentially permanent evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people in a 20-kilometer radius around the nuclear complex. NRC chairman Gregory Jaczko wondered how bad it might get on March 12. Responding to him is Dan Dorman, an NRC official.

JACZKO: "Where do you think we are, in terms of getting now, an assessment that includes an unvented or an open containment?"

DORMAN: "We have an assessment that is 100 percent core melt in an open containment and that's, as you would imagine, a very bad scenario with reaching the protective action guidelines out to 50 miles down wind."

Those guidelines in the U.S. are to prevent a significant dose of radiation, roughly 10 millisieverts in a short amount of time. The NRC allows nuclear power plant employees to endure a total of 50 millisieverts of radiation per year. Immediate radiation sickness hits at around 2000 millisieverts.

By March 14, hydrogen gas explosions captured live on television had blown out the walls and roofs of the Unit 1 and 3 reactor buildings. And then there was a loud sound from Unit 2, prompting this exchange between first NRC officials Jack Grob in Maryland and then Tony Ulses in Japan.

GROB: "Hey guys, when you said a loud sound, what did you interpret that as?"

ULSES: "It was my, I think both of us believe that one of the sources, that it wouldn't, it wasn't like the other two loud sounds with Unit 1 and 3 when the reactor building blew.

You know, my guess is, and it's just, it's just pure conjecture, would be it was probably when the core went ex-up."

Ex-up, or ex-vessel, means, in the jargon of the nuclear trade, melted down nuclear fuel that has burned its way out of the reactor.

UNIDENTIFIED: "And landing in the water under the vessel, it would have caused a little steam explosion."

GROB: "That's what I heard you say. But what you think is that that was a steam explosion from the fuel going ex-vessel, and we heard that containment at that point in time went from three atmospheres to one atmosphere."

    ULSES: "That makes sense."

Normally, a nuclear reactor operates at pressures far greater than the atmospheric pressure outside. So when the pressure in a nuclear reactor becomes the same as the surrounding environs, it suggests that reactor has a hole in it.

At this point, it was unclear exactly what the condition is of the melted down nuclear fuel in Units 1, 2 and 3. Radiation levels remain too high for a proper assessment. And the crisis would get worse as Grob reported on March 14.

GROB: "Unit 4 previously was reported as stable. That is no longer the case. The unit 4 reactor is de-fueled. The spent fuel pool is in --excuse me-- the spent fuel is in the spent fuel pool. The spent fuel pool is dry and there appears to be a zirconium fire in the spent fuel pool of Unit 4."

    And worse.

GROB: "Unit 2 is not in very good condition at all. It appears that core cooling has not existed for quite some time. It appears that the pumps that were injecting into the core have been deadheaded for some time. Several hours ago, there was a loud sound that appeared to come from inside the dry well, and at that time, the pressure inside primary containment went from 3 atmospheres to one atmosphere, essentially atmospheric pressure. There is clear indication that primary containment is not intact, and there may also be indication that fuel, that there has been substantial core melt, and possibly even the loud sound in the breach of containment was caused by an ex-vessel fuel situation."

The consequence of such a melt down could quickly spiral out of control, thanks to the older safety system design in use at Fukushima Daiichi, known as a Mark I containment. This structure, which rings the reactor itself at the bottom, has been known to be flawed for decades?as the NRC's Charles Casto, who flew to Japan to assist, outlined on March 16, discussing the NRC's safety guidelines for this type of reactor or NUREG.

CASTO: "You know, if we end up with a molten core and then you talk about the time for the concrete to disassociate, you know, that NUREG says it's a couple of inches an hour, you know. And, of course, that Mark I containment is the worst one of all the containments we have, and it's literally, you know, this NUREG tells you that in a station blackout you're going to lose containment. There's no doubt about it."

No electricity to run pumps to add cooling water to the melting down reactors. Rubble from the earthquake, tsunami and multiple explosions. Hazardous radiation levels throughout the facility preventing access to vital areas, such as the control rooms that allow workers to operate the nuclear power plant's systems. NRC official John Monninger:

MONNINGER: "I mean, they're, they run in the control rooms back and forth occasionally, but they're not really manning the control rooms."

Plus, the Japanese had to resort to pumping seawater into the reactors in a bid to cool them. The boiling hot nuclear fuel evaporated the brine, leaving salt to pile up inside. And that made the Japanese nervous. The NRC's Casto:

CASTO: "Could you please explain your concern with the seawater on the reactor vessel? And they said, we are very concerned with seawater deposition and impacts on the bottom heads, salt's impacts on the bottom heads, and we're very concerned about heat transfer rate on the fuel."

With good reason, according to NRC official Brian Sheron, talking with Casto in Japan:

SHERON: "We can get you some articles that we have here on salt. We've got one here from Naval Reactors. The punch line in there is that they should probably switch over to freshwater sources, if they have it, as soon as possible."

CASTO: "Yeah, and we talked about that, and I said you need to run your desalinization plant or reverse osmosis. And the Navy here is telling me, I don't know. The Navy guys can explain more about that stuff than I know about it, but we talked about that, and they're prepared to do that.

The challenges, as you well know, are how to do it. I mean, they can make freshwater, but the challenge is: how do you get freshwater into the reactors, you know, with a 100-R field or a 450-R field?"

Fukushima Daiichi could have been much, much worse, as Commissioner Jaczko observed on March 16.

JACZKO: "This is going to progress to the point at which we probably have, we, I think, have to assume at this point that we're going to have three reactors out of control and possibly up to six spent fuel pools."

In fact, a plume of radioactive contamination would spread for kilometers around the stricken nuclear power plant, shifting with the wind and weather. NRC official Patricia Holahan:

TRISH HOLAHAN: "Okay, the ANS flyover found the greatest concentration of contaminated materials to the northwest of the site, and there's a narrow band to the northwest beyond 13 miles from the site where the integrated four-day doses approach or exceed 1 rem. So we made the right decision in our prior recommendations in evacuating everybody within 50 miles."

Thanks to such evacuations and the heroic efforts of Japanese emergency workers, however, no one has died as a result of the nuclear crisis at Fukushima Daiichi. Tragically, the same cannot be said for the earthquake and tsunami that started it, as the NRC's Casto noted on March 17.

CASTO: "I mean these people have got--it's hell over here for that government. I mean, it's just absolutely hell. And I know we get frustrated with them, but, man, when you think about what they're faced with, it's absolutely unfathomable.

When you've got a thousand dead bodies washing up on shore, you know, it's, you know, these people, I don't know, I mean, we, you know, we think we'd be prepared for it, but it's, this is, it is tough for them. And we're over here barking at them about--and I want to do it, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to --- but you know, we do have to be a little patient. They're working hard and they have a lot of challenges."

A year later, all the nuclear fuel is now cooled enough that it can no longer boil water, or melt down. Japan's greenhouse gas emissions have swelled as it burns fossil fuels to replace the lost nuclear power. And the grieving continues for the tens of thousands who lost their lives in the tsunami as well as the tens of thousands who may never return home to the cities, towns and villages too close to the stricken nuclear power plant known as Fukushima Daiichi.

Were they minor hiccups or something much bigger? Kentucky, Syracuse and North Carolina will sort that out over the next three weeks.

For now, though, they have "No. 1" by their names ? top seeds and beneficiaries of a selection committee that all but ignored their weekend losses and put them in prime position for the NCAA tournament.

"The win streak? That's done now," Kentucky coach John Calipari said after his team lost only its second game of the season, a setback to Vanderbilt in the SEC tournament Sunday that ended a 24-game winning streak. "The fact that we were invincible? That's done now. We're going to be in a dog fight. That's how you have to approach this. Play each game like it's your last."

It's what the NCAA tournament is all about ? a three-week free-for-all that gives little guys such as VCU, a Final Four team last year, and Iona, one of the last teams to squeak into the tournament this year, a chance against Kentucky, Carolina and the rest of the so-called power teams.

Michigan State earned the fourth and final No. 1 seed and was the only top-billed team to win its conference tournament. The Spartans defeated Ohio State 68-64 in the Big Ten title game Sunday and earned top seeding for the first time since 2001. Michigan State is seeking its first national title since 2000.

"We were playing for a No. 1 seed, which we knew was a possibility," Spartans forward Draymond Green said. "And we were playing to do something that hasn't been done here since 2000. That's all the motivation we needed."

While No. 2 seeds Kansas, Duke, Missouri and Ohio State wonder whether they could have been rated higher, teams such as Drexel, Seton Hall, Mississippi State and Pac-12 regular-season champion Washington curse what might have been. Those bubble teams were left out, and all will be wondering how Iona, California, North Carolina State and South Florida made it in.

The Big East led all conferences with nine teams, including defending national champion Connecticut, a dangerous No. 9 seed, conference tournament winner Louisville and, of course, Syracuse, which cruised through most of the season with only one loss.

"I think it's going to help us a little bit," coach Jim Boeheim said of the second defeat, Friday to Cincinnati in the Big East tournament. "I think players, when they're winning, they kind of excuse their mistakes. I think we finally got their attention. I think they'll be a better team going forward than they were last week."

There were 11 at-large teams from the so-called mid-major conferences, four more than last year and the most since 2004 when 12 made it.

Though the committee claims not to consider a team's conference when it picks the bracket, this was nonetheless a nod to how unpredictable this tournament can be. Last year, 4,000-student Butler finished as national runner-up for the second straight season, while VCU, of the Colonial Athletic Conference, went from one of the last teams in the draw, all the way to the Final Four.

Who might be this year's VCU?

It's the question being asked across the country, as those $10- and $20-a-pop brackets start getting filled out in office pools and Internet contests around America. The tournament starts Tuesday with first-round games and gets into full swing Thursday and Friday, with 64 teams in action.

"There were 112 teams with more than 20 wins," said Jeff Hathaway, chairman of the NCAA selection committee. "We talked a lot about parity at the high end of the field and about quality throughout the field. Bottom line, it was about who did you play, where'd you play them and how did you do?"

Some results, though, were less important than others, and apparently, losing in the conference tournament didn't cost Syracuse, Kentucky or North Carolina. Those losses could have created chaos in the bracket, but the committee had the teams more or less cemented into top spots.

"Seeding really doesn't matter too much," Tar Heels guard P.J. Hairston said after Carolina's loss to Florida State in the ACC title game Sunday, but before he knew his team would have a '1' by its name. "As long as you get in the dance, it's an equal opportunity to get to the Final Four."

The Tar Heels open their run in the Midwest regional against the winner of a first-round game between Lamar and Vermont.

Led by freshmen Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, either of whom could be one-and-done in Calipari's turnover-heavy program, Kentucky is the No. 1 overall seed. Kentucky was placed in the South region and potentially could play six games without having to leave the Southeast.

Kentucky will open its 52nd NCAA tournament appearance in Louisville against the winner of a first-round game between Mississippi Valley State and Western Kentucky, but it gets tougher from there. A possible second-round opponent is UConn, with No. 4 Indiana and No. 2 Duke possibly waiting beyond that. Indiana handed Kentucky its first loss this year and anyone who knows college hoops knows about Duke-Kentucky: This is the 20th anniversary of Duke forward Christian Laettner's last-second catch-and-shoot game-winner against the Wildcats.

In the West, Michigan State will begin its quest for its seventh Final Four since 1999 against No. 16 LIU. The bottom of the West draw features No. 2 Missouri, which won the Big 12 tournament but got penalized for a weak nonconference schedule.

"That hasn't changed at all over the years," Hathaway said when asked whether the committee rewards programs that beef up their schedules.

In the East region, Syracuse opens against UNC Asheville with a possible third-round matchup against Jared Sullinger and Ohio State. Other games include No. 3 Florida State, which went 4-1 against Duke and North Carolina this year, against No. 14 St. Bonaventure, which was a surprise winner of the A-10 conference tournament and took a bubble spot away.

    Maybe Drexel's?

"There must be a lot of people on the basketball committee that don't know too much about basketball," said Dragons coach Bruiser Flint, whose team went 27-6.

Others left out included Miami, Northwestern, Nevada and Oral Roberts. All had flaws, as did Iona, though the Gaels' strength of schedule appeared to carry them through.

"We tried to play teams or conferences ranked above ours, and most of those games we really had to play on the road to get those games," Iona coach Tim Cluess said. "We spent seven, eight weeks in a row on the road this year, but those were the teams we had to play to give ourselves a chance."

World News - With tensions high in Mideast, evangelical Christians ...

Meredith Mandell / Special to msnbc.com

Scott Johnson, standing in gray sweatshirt, an evangelical Christian from Seymour, Tenn., hosts Israelis at his home.

By Meredith Mandell, Special to msnbc.com

Thousands of miles from their home in Seymour, Tenn., Scott and Theresa Johnson host Shabbat dinners in their Jerusalem apartment every Friday night for "lone soldiers" ? as the young men and women who travel from foreign countries to serve in the Israeli army are known.

Typically, 20 or 30 of the soldiers join the Johnsons for a traditional meal and wine and to join in a rousing rendition of "Shalom Aleichem," an old Hebrew song sung to greet the Sabbath day of rest. Scott Johnson leads the song wearing a "kippah" ? a traditional Jewish head cover ? and standing beneath a painting of Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier held prisoner in Gaza for five years before being released in October.

The Johnsons, however, are not Jewish. They are evangelical Christians who live in Israel full-time, operating a U.S.-based 501 c(3) nonprofit, the Servants to Christ Corp.

Servants to Christ is one of scores of evangelical Christian organizations working in Israel on a variety of charitable missions. And its presence is just one example of the increasingly tight embrace of the Jewish state by both the leadership of American evangelical churches and organizations and their grass-roots supporters.

Pro-Israel rhetoric ? fueled in part by increasing tensions in the Middle East over Iran's nuclear program and the threat it might pose to the Jewish state ?? is a staple of many U.S. evangelical leaders' speeches and sermons.

It has likewise become a popular refrain among GOP presidential candidates looking to shore up their support with the party's conservative religious wing.

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, for example, recently made comments calling the Palestinians an "invented people" and has said he would support Israel if it decided to attack Iran.

Israel asks US for arms that could aid Iran strike

Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, said such staunch support for Israel is fundamental to the evangelical movement.

"American evangelicals have it in their DNA: God blesses those who bless the Jews and curses whoever curses the Jews," he said.??"We want God to bless America and if America doesn't support Israel we don't have his blessing. It doesn't mean Israel is always right, it doesn't mean we don't remonstrate Israel, but we are going to have their back."

War for American hearts and minds rages over Islam

That broad backing for Israel is in part grounded in a widely held evangelical belief that the existence of a Jewish state is a prerequisite for the second coming of Jesus.

Many evangelicals believe that when Jesus returns, it will be to Israel. The purpose of his Second Coming will be to destroy its enemies and return to heaven with his followers in what is variously called the Rapture or the End Times.

    'Islamaphobic'
Under this interpretation of the Book of Revelation, the Rapture can't happen if there is no Jewish state in the Holy Land.

But critics ? including some within the evangelical movement itself ? say that such devout allegiance to Israel is also being driven by a more worldly concern: fear of Islam.

"We definitely believe they (U.S. evangelical leaders) are Islamaphobic and that is hindering them from having the right approach toward Islam," said Munther Isaac, an instructor at Bethlehem Bible College who describes himself on his blog as a Palestinian evangelical Christian.

Obama accuses GOP critics of 'beating the drums of war' in Mideast

Isaac is a co-organizer of a five-day conference that began Monday in Bethlehem titled "Christ at the Checkpoint." The goal of the event, which is expected to draw up to 600 people, is "to equip the global church to understand Scripture as it relates to the Palestinian context, and to discuss the theological importance of Peace and Justice in an evangelical context." Among the lectures on the agenda is one titled "Loving the Muslim."

Isaac, 32, said many evangelicals and politicians who court them often make no distinction between radical Islam and the religion's mainstream:?"The more we demonize Islam in our talks, in our books, in our sermons, the more we polarize them ? it's like feeding the enemy and empowering the more radical voice, and we shouldn't do that."

But Land, of the Southern Baptist Convention, criticized what he referred to as "replacement theologians" within the evangelical movement who do not see the creation of the state of Israel as an act of divine intervention.

"Unfortunately, many people in the replacement theology crowd seem to give moral equivalence to Israel and her enemies and we do not see moral equivalence," Land said.?

He also rejected the notion that ?Islamaphobia? plays any role in evangelical support for Israel, ticking off numerous deadly attacks perpetrated by Muslim extremists against Americans and others, including the 2009 Fort Hood shooting in Texas and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

American Muslims come of age in post-9/11 era

"There is a dangerous cult loose within Islam called Wahhabism, and it's called Jihadism," he said. "It needs to be confronted for what it is and it needs to be defeated. When people are trying to kill you it's not Islamaphobic, it's reality."

Others are more direct in their criticism of Isaac and other organizers of the Christ at the Checkpoint conference.

"We think our support for Israel is a positive response from the heart, not out of a diagnosed or supposed phobia," said David Parsons, a spokesman for the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, a nonprofit evangelical ministry. He called the Christ at the Checkpoint organizers "misguided" and "dishonest."

"They've not been honest about why the wall and the checkpoints are there, and they downplay the terrorists' threats to Israel, and they downplay the persecution of Palestinian Christians by their Muslim neighbors," Parsons said.

    Political tumult
Mistrust of Islam and its adherents within the evangelical movement is well documented. ?A survey published last year by the Pew Center Forum on Public Life indicated that 67 percent of more than 2,200 evangelical leaders surveyed expressed an unfavorable view of Islam and that 47 percent considered Islam to be a "major threat" to Christianity.

But many evangelical Christian Zionists point to the current escalation of tensions between Israel and Iran, which Israel says is trying to develop nuclear weapons, as well as the political tumult and violence in the Middle East arising from the continuing Arab Spring uprisings, as legitimate reasons to be concerned.

Muslim-Americans: Good riddance to bin Laden

Rebecca Brimmer, chief executive and president of Bridges for Peace, a Jerusalem-based evangelical group that operates the largest food drive in the country, said: "I don't hate any people or group. But, it's like with (Iranian President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad saying hateful things ? if I quote what Ahmadinejad says, does that mean I am Islamaphobic? Or does it mean I am a realist that says this is what this man is saying and we should pay attention." Ahmadinejad has been quoted as calling for the destruction of Israel.

That sentiment has spilled over into broader forums.

Conservative American political commentator Glenn Beck last year organized a gathering of more than 3,000 people in the ancient Israeli city of Ceasaria for what he called a "Restoring Courage" tour intended to highlight concerns that pro-Islamist governments were springing up throughout the Middle East and north Africa in the wake of last year's "Arab Spring" revolts. While Beck is Mormon, the event drew a heavily evangelical crowd and featured evangelical pastor John C. Hagee as a keynote speaker.

Republicans could give Obama green light on Iran

Hagee, a Texas minister and the founder of Christians United for Israel, revved up the crowd with these words: "People of Israel, we have come from America and the nations of the world as people of faith. God is with you. Fifty million evangelicals in America are with you. This time in history you are not alone. ... Your enemies are our enemies, and your fight is our fight. We are united, and we will prevail."

The belief that a military conflict between Israel and Iran is coming explains why many evangelical Christians, like the Johnsons, are also big supporters of the Friends of the IDF (the Israeli Defense Forces, a charitable organization providing assistance to Israeli soldiers.

    Pizza in the trenches
Scott Johnson, who calls himself an ardent "Christian Zionist," says he is not ashamed to take sides. During the Lebanon war in 2006, the Johnsons took a van and went to Ramban Hospital in Haifa to pick up wounded soldiers and return them to their homes. They also went to the Lebanon border and delivered pizza, falafel and shawarma to Israeli soldiers in the trenches. And on several occasions they have hosted barbecues on their terrace for entire units of the IDF.

"I believe Islam is a threat to the world. It's a threat to decent, moral human beings. Not 100 percent of them, but the ones in control," Scott Johnson said.

Observers say evangelical support for Israel gained momentum after Israel's Six Day War in 1967 against Syria, Jordan and Egypt. Many evangelicals viewed Israel's victory against its Soviet-backed Arab neighbors with admiration, reminiscent of the biblical story of David, the future king of Israel, defeating gigantic Philistine warrior Goliath.

Atheist billboard hits snag in Jewish neighborhood

In 1980, after the international community condemned Israel for declaring Jerusalem the "eternal and indivisible capital" of the Jewish state and 13 nations shifted their embassies to Tel Aviv, Christian Zionists established the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, to show their support for the Jewish state.

During the 1980s, the Israeli government began to organize all-expenses-paid "familiarization" tours of the Holy Land for evangelical pastors in an effort to cement such support. Evangelical Christian Mission trips and humanitarian tours continue today, giving the country not only moral support but also a nice economic boost. During the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, for example, roughly 5,000 evangelicals visit Israel as part of the Christian celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles, and 60 percent of Israel's 2.8 million tourists last year were Christian pilgrims, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

Historically, some Israelis have been suspicious of Christian groups inside the country, worrying that their aim is to convert Jews to Christianity. But given their staunch political support for Israel in recent years, most Israeli politicians now welcome them.

"I think why there is there such a strong connection between Jews and Christians, especially at the political level in Israel, is we saw during the (Palestinian uprising) intifada that one by one, the nations of the world were turning against us," said Joshua Reinstein, director of the Israeli Knesset's Christian Allies Caucus. "But Christians stood their ground and stood up next to us."?

Unbelievable: Panetta cites international law as legal basis for ...

You really have to watch this in its entirety. As Sen. Sessions suggests, it is breathtaking to hear Panetta say the Obama administration would seek UN approval instead of congressional approve for military action, specifically in Syria:

Obama is bypassing Congress every chance he can to do whatever he wants. He did it in Libya and then never complied with the War Powers Act, and I?d expect he?d do that again. He is a totalitarian, it?s just that simple.
