Heat hampers efforts to fight Colorado fires

WOODLAND PARK, Colo. (AP) ? Air Force Academy officials were evacuating roughly one-third of households on the school's grounds Tuesday night as heavy smoke billowed from a wildfire that has burned homes near Colorado Springs.

The school said it was evacuating 693 residents in Pine Valley Housing, but an area of the 28-square-mile campus that houses cadets wasn't immediately evacuated. A new class of cadets is still scheduled to report on Thursday.

Fire officials had issued a pre-evacuation notice for the academy earlier Tuesday.

Fire information officer Greg Heule said earlier Tuesday that the fire was less than five miles from the southwest corner of the academy's campus.

Television images showed homes burning, and the Flying W Ranch southwest of the Air Force Academy said on its website that the ranch had burned to the ground.

Meanwhile, authorities in central Utah found one woman dead Tuesday when they returned to an evacuated area, marking the first casualty in a blaze that consumed at least two dozen homes and appears to be taking a turn for the worst.

Throughout the interior West, firefighters toiled in searing, record-setting heat that refused to relinquish its grip, as they struggled to contain blazes in Colorado, Utah and other Rocky Mountain states Tuesday.

Colorado has endured nearly a week of 100-plus-degree days and low humidity, sapping moisture from timber and grass, creating a devastating formula for volatile wildfires across the state and punishing conditions for firefighters.

"When it's that hot, it just dries the fuels even more. That can make the fuels explosive," said Steve Segin, a fire spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service.

All of Utah and much of Wyoming, Colorado and Montana were under a red flag warning, meaning conditions were hot, dry and ripe for fires.

Tuesday was the fifth consecutive day with temperatures of 100 degrees or higher in Denver, tying a record set in 2005 and 1989. On Monday, Denver set a record with 105 degrees. The previous record for June 25 was 100 degrees in 1991.

Other areas of the state also topped 100 degrees Tuesday, including the northeastern Colorado town of Wray, which hit 108, the National Weather Service said.

What the nation is now seeing is "a super-heated spike on top of a decades long warming trend," said Derek Arndt, head of climate monitoring at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

The U.S. set 107 new temperature records Monday and in the past week has set 782 of them, which are large numbers but hard to put in context because the data center has only been tracking the number of daily records broken for little more than a year, Arndt said.

But what's truly impressive, Arndt said, is that in the past three days in Colorado and Kansas, nine sites have set records regardless of the date. Usually hottest-ever marks are set in the scorching months of July and August.

The scorching heat doesn't appear to be letting up soon. Segin said such prolonged heat is "extremely taxing" physically on firefighters, who are working long days and carrying heavy gear.

Television video from the 7-square-mile Waldo Canyon fire west of Colorado Springs, Colo., showed smoke and flames close to houses in a forested neighborhood northwest of Colorado Springs.

The fire was 5 percent contained.

Two specially equipped Air Force C-130 cargo planes were helping fight the fire, and a third was expected later in the day.

With the nation's privately owned fleet of heavy air tankers already in use or unavailable, U.S. Forest Chief Tom Tidwell said his agency had to call on the military to help.

Tidwell told The Associated Press in a phone interview Monday that about half of the nation's personnel who are usually assigned to large fires are working in Colorado right now.

"It's just because it's so dry," Tidwell said. "Not unlike New Mexico ? they saw very low snowpack, especially in that lower country. Hot, dry winds with dry fuels, you get the ignition, and this is what we see."

At the 136-square-mile High Park fire in northern Colorado, authorities increased the number of homes destroyed to 257, saying they found nine homes that hadn't been counted earlier. The total was already the highest of any wildfire in state history.

That fire was 55 percent contained.

In Utah, Sanpete County sheriff's officials haven't identified the body found or explained where the remains were found Tuesday morning while assessing damage in the area.

On Tuesday morning, officials announced that the 60-square-mile Wood Hollow Fire was 15 percent contained and lifted some evacuation orders amid predictions they'd contain the blaze even further. But winds fanned the flames again by afternoon, forcing authorities to shut down part of U.S. 89 near Indianola amid fears that the fire would jump the highway.

Evacuations were called for Fairview, a town of about 1,100 residents near the blaze, as the fire grew larger and more erratic.

Elsewhere in the West:

? A fire that charred nearly 70 square miles west of Ruidoso, N.M., was 90 percent contained, with many residents allowed to return home.

? A wildfire north of Helena, Mont., destroyed four homes and forced additional evacuations. Gov. Brian Schweitzer issued a state of emergency for four counties.

? A wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest grew from about 300 acres to 2,000 acres Tuesday, marking the first major wildfire of the season in western Wyoming.

CHICAGO (AP) - Theo Epstein still can't erase the Boston Red Sox's collapse last season from his mind.

Now the Chicago Cubs' president of baseball operations, he says he remembers "stuff from 2003." And what happened late last season, when he was Boston's general manager, was the "toughest of all of them."

"At the same time, you move on," he added. "You learn from it, try to get better."

The subject came up with the Red Sox visiting Wrigley Field for the first time since 2005. Epstein spoke before Friday's game.

The Red Sox were in line for a playoff spot but missed out for the second straight year after going 7-20 in September, one of the worst months in club history. The collapse led to Boston declining manager Terry Francona's option and Epstein jumping to Chicago, a bitter end to one of the club's most successful decades.

The Red Sox won championships in 2004 and 2007 with Epstein as GM after going 86 years without one, and the Cubs are hoping he can help bring them their first since 1908.

Clearly, they have a long way to go. They entered Friday's game with a major league-worst 21-42 record.

"We've been here six months," Epstein said. "There's been progress in a lot of different areas. Some of it is behind the scenes. We've put together a new scouting plan, development philosophy, getting them on the same page, commit to a vision for the future as far as young players we're trying to identify and develop. A lot of work behind the scenes."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is predicting the Supreme Court will uphold the constitutionality of the health care law by a 6-3 vote.

Pelosi didn't say how she thought individual justices would vote in her appearance Friday on "CBS This Morning."

But the California Democrat said her party is "prepared for any eventuality," including the possibility the high court may overturn some or all of the law that critics have labeled "Obamacare."

Pelosi said "we're ironclad on the constitutionality" and the public already is taking advantage of some features, including allowing young people up to age 26 to be covered on their parents' policies and prohibiting discrimination against the young based on pre-existing conditions.

The high court is expected to rule in the case in the next two weeks.

Last week, the Austrian Times reported the turtles were getting a "divorce," after the female turtle, Bibi, bit off part of the male turtle, Poldi?s, shell.

Zoo staff reported the pair have reached the point where they ?couldn?t stand each other,? and despite staff efforts to reconcile the reptiles, with aphrodisiacs and interactive games, nothing seems to have helped.?

The Austrian Times didn?t specify what species of tortoise the pair are, but giant tortoises have been known to live up to 150 years.

Bibi and Poldi are both 115 years old, and have been together since they were young, eventually becoming a pair. Before moving to the Austrian zoo in Klagenfurt, they reportedly lived together at Basel Zoo in Switzerland.

It seems as the though the split was initiated by Bibi, who not only bit off part of Poldi?s shell, but launched several other attacks against her life-long mate. The turtles each weigh over 200 pounds, and with horn-rimmed mouths and powerful jaws, could easily harm each other if they wanted to.

For his own protection, Poldi was moved to a new bachelor's pad, er, enclosure.

Luka Magnotta Case: Body Parts Sent To Vancouver Schools Confirmed As Jun Lin

A hand and foot sent to Vancouver schools last week have been confirmed as a match to Luka Magnotta's alleged dismembered victim, Jun Lin.

TORONTO ? Police say DNA results confirm that the body parts mailed to two Vancouver schools last week belong to the Chinese student who was killed and dismembered in Montreal.

Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere said Wednesday that all the body parts match. A foot and a hand were also mailed to two of Canada's top political parties in Ottawa.

Police suspect Luka Magnotta of killing Jun Lin and posting a video online that shows him having sex with the dismembered corpse. Magnotta was caught in Berlin last week and is facing extradition.

One of Lin's feet and a hand were mailed to two schools last week. His head is still missing.

Sunday, he outdid himself when he took the field during a rain delay at the Charleston RiverDogs game. Murray is a part owner of the New York Yankees Class-A affiliate and can be seen running around the wet tarp before making a dive into a tarp-covered home plate.

Stakes higher, bloodier in 'True Blood' premiere

No one said it was easy to live in Bon Temps. "True Blood" loves to go out with a bang, and Tara's (Rutina Wesley) gunshot wound to the head was just one in a long list of "True Blood"-style cliffhangers we were left with at the end of last season.

Is Russell Edgington (Denis O'Hare) free? Is Tara dead? We have lots of ground to cover, so let's get right into it. Want to know what trouble Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) got up to in the season premiere of "True Blood"? Find out now:?

WHAT WE LEARNED?

Turning Tara: Sookie and Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) are determined to save the dead/dying Tara. Luckily for everyone involved, Pam (Kristen Bauer van Straten) shows up. Oh Sookie, don't you know better than to owe a favor to a vampire? While they wait for Tara to turn, Sookie has to clean up the kitchen. Can we just point out that we'd never want to prepare food in that room. Far too many people have bled out in there.?

It's been a while since we last saw them, so it's easy to forget that this is the world's worst day for these unlucky friends. (P.S.: Jesus' body is missing.) And things only get worse when Tara opens her eyes. Is this going to be a good or bad thing for the character of Tara? "True Blood" takes every opportunity to shy away from killing off its characters. Despite a crazy amount of bad things and bloodshed, hardly anyone dies and stays dead.?

Sibling Savior: Not to be outdone by HBO sister shows "Game of Thrones" ?and "Boardwalk Empire," "True Blood" joins the pseudo-incest game with Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) and his "sister." We really like to think that this show has reached a point where it can make fun of itself. Between some hilariously disturbing jokes and Lafayette rejecting all supernatural creatures, they might as well embrace the often-ridiculous subplots and be in on the joke. Frankly, the show is most entertaining when you accept the satire.?

Not as funny: Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Eric are so completely and totally (expletive) this time. If the Authority is as bad as all we've heard it is, Eric's charm and Bill's Southern drawl will not get them out of this mess.

Wolf Politics: Sam (Sam Trammell) is a wanted man. Apparently there are consequences to killing a werewolf pack master. Sam will have to pay the iron price -- actually he might be about to get out of this whole mess if he would just turn over Alcide (Joe Manganiello). This episode was actually very informative. Like, we know Alcide could be the new pack master. Oh, and werewolves eat the dead bodies of their own. Super gross.?

Old Friends: We're torn. We love Scott Foley, but aren't exactly enjoying this new Terry (Todd Lowe) storyline. Scott Foley -- yes, we know the character has a name -- is in town and acting purposefully creepy. Apparently that house fire wasn't caused by a friendly ghost, but is tied up with Terry's combat experience. No good can come from pyromaniac seeking justice.

Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian) is another person who shows up in Bon Temps like a bad penny. But what's the best way get your jugular ripped out? Reject the newly turned and notoriously insane vampire who is spilling his heart. Thank God for Little Red Riding Jess (Deborah Ann Woll) is coming to the rescue of Jason (Ryan Kwanten).?

Rewind Moment: Like a 1990s action movie, Eric slow-motion kisses his "sister" while a car burns in the background, natch.

Accelerated Learning PreSchoolers - Improve Your Memory

Anyone who has ever been around small children for any length of time will be in constant awe of how much they change each day ? new habits, personality, memory, speech, etc. Their brains are developing and expanding during the first two years, while they learn their language and motor skills, faster than they will ever develop again. It is during these primo years that introduction to foreign languages is the most beneficial, since they are still learning their native language and won?t know the difference.

Trying to start accelerated learning before the age of two is not going to produce as much benefit as it would between the ages of 3-5, since their memories are still developing. That is why most people can?t remember anything before the age of two. The 3-5 age groups brain cell growth is beginning to slow down, and new connections are being formed.

As toddlers take in all that is going on around them they are stretching their brains to develop more language and cognitive skills. They are learning the ability to solve problems, picking up cognitive skills, and finding their individuality. Their are becoming more coordinated, and becoming more independent. It is the time when they are open to new adventures and experiences.

?Kids should be out there exploring and getting ready for their next important job: going to school,? says developmental pediatrician Michele Macias, MD, spokeswoman for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and chairwoman of their developmental and behavioral pediatrics department.

To aid them in their development, and help them with memory and concentration, it is important that parents work alongside them to engage them in learning. Children learn by observation and imitation, so spend as much time as possible with your child. Let their imaginations run free and encourage interaction with adults and other children their own age in order to learn how develop social skills. ?A child who doesn?t develop well socially could be the most brilliant person in the world in terms of IQ, but their poor social skills can make them less successful in terms of health, school outcomes, and even jobs,? Macias says.

??The simple exchange of language and ideas is a much more important brain builder than putting your child in a million different activities,? says Macias. ?Studies have shown that parents and children reading together improve literacy by sharpening vocabulary and language skills. It also leads to discussions that help a child better understand what they are reading.?

Don?t try to structure to much for them, preschoolers have fabulous imaginations. Allow their minds to wander, let them ask question and pretend. Allow them to expand their minds by role-playing and dress-up activities. ?Much like reading, make-believe lets kids practice things they might not actually be able to experience in real life,? Macias says. ?For instance, when your preschooler smashes one toy car into another and then sends their toy ambulance in to the rescue, or sends their helicopter to rescue their stuffed animal off the cliff that you call a kitchen countertop, they?re absorbing and rehearsing crisis management in a very safe setting.?

Do puzzles and short simple games with them that are age-appropriate. Teach them crafts. These activities help them to develop patience, self-control and concentration, as well as work on their motor skills. It?s important that you don?t let them win all the time (although it doesn?t hurt once in a while to build up their confidence); they need to learn that they will not always win, and how to accept defeat graciously.

There is nothing wrong with playing educational electronic games, and certain videos and educational television programs can benefit them. Not all television is bad for a child, nor are video games. Wii games are interactive, and can be played on different levels that can? include other family members. Carefully screen what they play and watch, and don?t let it become a babysitter in place of interaction with the child and you.

Don?t overload your child with activities. Allow them to find ways to amuse themselves. Make sure they are having fun. You may be amazed, but you will be having fun too ? and build up your own brain cells. Too many activities could backfire, according to Macias. When a child gets frustrated and tired they tend to take out their aggravation by acting out.

Simply put, being there to answer questions and interact with your child puts them steps ahead of many of their peers.
