(AP) ? A Chinese government think tank is urging the country's leaders to start phasing out its one-child policy immediately and allow two children for every family by 2015, a daring proposal to do away with the unpopular policy.

Some demographers see the timeline put forward by the China Development Research Foundation as a bold move by the body close to the central leadership. Others warn that the gradual approach, if implemented, would still be insufficient to help correct the problems that China's strict birth limits have created.

Xie Meng, a press affairs official with the foundation, said the final version of the report wil be released "in a week or two." But Chinese state media have been given advance copies. The official Xinhua News Agency said the foundation recommends a two-child policy in some provinces from this year and a nationwide two-child policy by 2015. It proposes all birth limits be dropped by 2020, Xinhua reported.

"China has paid a huge political and social cost for the policy, as it has resulted in social conflict, high administrative costs and led indirectly to a long-term gender imbalance at birth," Xinhua said, citing the report.

But it remains unclear whether Chinese leaders are ready to take up the recommendations. China's National Population and Family Planning Commission had no immediate comment on the report Wednesday.

Known to many as the one-child policy, China's actual rules are more complicated. The government limits most urban couples to one child, and allows two children for rural families if their first-born is a girl. There are numerous other exceptions as well, including looser rules for minority families and a two-child limit for parents who are themselves both singletons.

Cai Yong, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, said the report holds extra weight because the think tank is under the State Council, China's Cabinet. He said he found it remarkable that state-backed demographers were willing to publicly propose such a detailed schedule and plan on how to get rid of China's birth limits.

"That tells us at least that policy change is inevitable, it's coming," said Cai, who was not involved in the drafting of the report but knows many of the experts who were. Cai is currently a visiting scholar at Fudan University in Shanghai. "It's coming, but we cannot predict when exactly it will come."

Adding to the uncertainty is a once-in-a-decade leadership transition that kicks off Nov. 8 that will see a new slate of top leaders installed by next spring. Cai said the transition could keep population reform on the back burner or changes might be rushed through to help burnish the reputations of President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on their way out.

There has been growing speculation among Chinese media, experts and ordinary people about whether the government will soon relax the one-child policy ? introduced in 1980 as a temporary measure to curb surging population growth ? and allow more people to have two children.

Though the government credits the policy with preventing hundreds of millions of births and helping lift countless families out of poverty, it is reviled by many ordinary people. The strict limits have led to forced abortions and sterilizations, even though such measures are illegal. Couples who flout the rules face hefty fines, seizure of their property and loss of their jobs.

Many demographers argue that the policy has worsened the country's aging crisis by limiting the size of the young labor pool that must support the large baby boom generation as it retires. They say it has contributed to the imbalanced sex ratio by encouraging families to abort baby girls, preferring to try for a male heir.

The government recognizes those problems and has tried to address them by boosting social services for the elderly. It has also banned sex-selective abortion and rewarded rural families whose only child is a girl.

Many today also see the birth limits as outdated, a relic of the era when housing, jobs and food were provided by the state.

"It has been thirty years since our planned economy was liberalized," commented Wang Yi, the owner of a shop that sells textiles online, under a news report on the foundation's proposal. "So why do we still have to plan our population?"

Though open debate about the policy has flourished in state media and on the Internet, leaders have so far expressed a desire to maintain the status quo. President Hu said last year that China would keep its strict family planning policy to keep the birth rate low and other officials have said that no changes are expected until at least 2015.

Wang Feng, director of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy and an expert on China's demographics, contributed research material to the foundation's report but has yet to see the full text. He said he welcomed the gist of the document that he's seen in state media.

It says the government "should return the rights of reproduction to the people," he said. "That's very bold."

Gu Baochang, a professor of demography at Beijing's Renmin University and a vocal advocate of reform, said the proposed timeline wasn't aggressive enough.

"They should have reformed this policy ages ago," he said. "It just keeps getting held up, delayed."

Import of proteins into chloroplasts is differentially regulated by age

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? New research has found that the transport of proteins into chloroplasts in plants is differentially regulated by the age of the chloroplast; upturning the previously accepted notion that this process is age-independent or only globally up- or down- regulated for all proteins.

The research, led by Dr. Hsou-min Li, a Research Fellow from the Institute of Molecular Biology, Academia Sinica of Taiwan, is published October 30 in the open access journal PLOS Biology.

It's long been known that gene expression changes with age, for example, some genes are expressed in young organisms, others in aged organisms. However, up until now, it has been generally believed that the protein-transport processes that take place inside a cell occur independently of the cell's age.

Dr. Li and colleagues investigated pea leaves of different ages and discovered that proteins imported into chloroplasts -- the organelles in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs -- can be divided into three groups: one group prefers to be imported into very young chloroplasts, the second group has no special preference, and the third group prefer to be imported into older chloroplasts.

"Age-dependent regulation at the protein transport level had not been thoroughly investigated due to technical difficulties," Dr Li explained. "Pea seedlings offer an excellent model for such studies because each plant has leaves of different ages on a single stem and they are cheap to grow. Other scientists have taken advantage of this but at that time, they only had a very limited number of proteins to test. Now with data from genomic and proteomic analyses, we can test a lot more proteins and can show not only that the regulation exists, but also that every protein can be regulated differently."

After finding this novel regulation, Dr Li's group then attempted to find the signal that controls age selectivity. They found that, for each protein, the age-selective signal is located within the signal peptide that controls organelle import. They also identified a signal-peptide motif that is necessary for targeting proteins to older chloroplasts.

"We knew that signal peptides specify the organelle a protein is supposed to be targeted to, acting like address labels," said Dr Li. "When we found that they also contain the information for the age selectivity we observed, we decided to try to identify the "code" that instructs a protein to go to older chloroplasts first. The existence of such a code means that chloroplast signal peptides are not just address labels -- they also contain information about "when" a protein should be delivered."

These findings may have implications for selectively targeting proteins into organelles of aging tissues, said Dr Li. "We believe similar kinds of regulation mechanisms may also exist for other organelles in other organisms, like humans. For example, there may be signal peptide motifs that will allow us to specifically target therapeutic proteins into mitochondria in aging cardiac tissues."

Emergency Preparedness and Food Allergies - Not Missing a Thing!

So, Hurricane Sandy is headed straight for our area and it has me thinking . . . are we prepared? ?Preparing for emergencies is one thing, but when one or more family members have food allergies, preparing requires a bit more forethought. ?The nice thing is that, with the exception of tornadoes, for weather-related emergencies we usually have ample warning and time to grab a few things at the grocery store. ?First off, think about what kind of emergency are you preparing for? ?Do you anticipate being without electricity or is there the potential that your family would have to evacuate? ?Please know that I am not a disaster preparedness expert, so my list is not a complete one. ?Its just meant to get you thinking about what you might need to do to prepare in case of an emergency. ?Here's what I've come up with.

1. The Usual Stuff: ?Create an emergency kit that can be used in the event that you are without electricity for more than a few hours. ?When we built our kit, we purchased an emergency hand crank radio/flashlight combo. ?This one also has a cell phone charger which could be really helpful should the power be out for an extended about of time. (BTW, be sure your cell phones are fully charged before an expected storm reaches you.) Be sure to have a simple?first aid kit?that includes enough items for your family size. ?And of course you'll need a nice supply of flash lights and batteries. ?We try to have at least one flashlight per family member - children feel much better knowing they can carry their own flashlight around a darkened house. ?We love our?battery-operated lantern?because you can set it on a table and feel like you've got light in the room. ?Its also great cause it lets you sit around the lantern and play family board games that don't get played nearly enough. ?If you live where its cold, you'll want to collect some cozy blankets.

2. The Special Stuff:

FOOD: ?Once you've gathered some basics, you'll want to think specifically about your family. ?What will you eat and drink if the power is out? ?Realistically, most Americans would be just fine to live a day or two at home with the food they have on hand, but its nice to think ahead and be sure your family will be taken care of. ?If you are without power for more than a day, you may need to start eating from your fridge to avoid throwing out spoiled food (unless you've got a generator keeping your fridge cold). ?Stock-up on non-perishables that will be easy and safe for your family to eat. ?Try to choose items that your family will eat anyway, so that if an expected storm ends up passing by without causing much trouble, you won't have wasted money on food items you'll never use. ?Here's my short list of food items I've stock up on for this coming storm.??
- Gluten-free crackers?
?- Peanut butter?
?-?Gluten-free granola bars?
?- Gluten-free bread (I bought a loaf since I wasn't sure I'd have time to bake?homemade bread)?
?- Corn chips and salsa?
- Fruit and Veggies - Think apples, grapes and carrot sticks which require no preparation.?
?- Cook some chicken: ?I thought I'd bake a few chicken breasts and stash them in the fridge. ?We can cut them in strips and make a cold chicken strip salad for dinner - no electricity needed.??
- Canned goods such as baked beans and tuna?
- A gallon of water - We have city water and don't anticipate loosing access to water, but it just seemed like the sensible thing to do (though one gallon of water isn't going to get a family of 5 very far - ha!).?
- Almond milk - the kind in the box is shelf stable. ?I got a few because even my non-allergic ? family can drink this.?
?-?Gluten-Free Cookies?- Since this storm is about a day away, I still have time to bake a batch of cookies. ?I'm betting that will bring a smile to my kids' faces when I pull out the cookies during that family game time I'm hoping for. ?You could also buy some store-bought cookies like?Kinnikinnick sandwich cookies?(yummy!).?
MEDICATION: ?If you have family members who require medication, be sure you have enough of a supply on hand.
If you anticipate the need to evacuate, you'll need to bring along allergy-friendly foods. ?Most of the things on the above list would be great to pack in a go-bag if you think you'll need to leave your home due to a storm.
This is by no means a complete list, but hopefully it will get you started on preparing in case you loose power or have to evacuate due to weather-related emergencies. ?What other ideas do you have? ?Please share them so we can all help each other to be prepared.

Here are a few more articles to help you think about preparing for emergencies: ?Kids With Food Allergies Emergency Preparedness,?FEMA's Are You Ready Guide, and?American Red Cross Plan.

Mars rover begins munching dirt, finds weird bright stuff (+video)

The soil has been successfully delivered to the rover's Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument, or CheMin, mission scientists announced Oct. 18.

This image shows part of the small pit or bite created when NASA's Mars rover Curiosity collected its second scoop of Martian soil at a sandy patch called 'Rocknest.' This image was taken by the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera on Curiosity's arm during the 69th Martian day, or sol, of the mission (Oct. 15, 2012).

The $2.5 billion?Curiosity rover?ingested the minuscule sample ? which contains about as much material as a baby aspirin ? on Wednesday (Oct. 17). The soil has been successfully delivered to the rover's Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument, or CheMin, mission scientists announced today (Oct. 18).

"We are crossing a significant threshold for this mission by using CheMin on its first sample," Curiosity lead scientist John Grotzinger, of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said in a statement.

"This instrument gives us a more definitive mineral-identifying method than ever before used on Mars: X-ray diffraction," Grotzinger added. "Confidently identifying minerals is important because minerals record the environmental conditions under which they form." [Video: Curiosity's First Scoopful of Mars Dirt]

Bright stuff on Mars

The sample that found its way into CheMin came from the third scoop of soil Curiosity dug up at a site dubbed "Rocknest." The first scoop was discarded after being used to scrub out the rover's sampling system, to help ensure that no Earth-originating residues remained.

Work at Rocknest slowed after Curiosity dug its second scoop on Oct. 12, when researchers noticed?oddly bright flecks?at the bottom of the hole. The team dumped the scoop out, worried that it might contain debris that had flaked off Curiosity.

They already knew that some tiny rover pieces are littering the Martian ground, after?spotting a bright shred?of what appears to be plastic on Oct. 7. Team members have since identified five or six other such bits, which may have fallen off Curiosity's sky-crane descent stage during landing on Aug. 5.

"We went super-paranoid," Grotzinger told reporters today. The team determined that "if this stuff is man-made, we better make sure that we're not taking any of it in."

So Curiosity moved to a slightly different location, and then took lots of pictures to make sure that the surface was pristine before making scoop number three. If any bright flecks are indeed present in the sample, they're naturally occurring, the mission team reasons, since any rover pieces would be restricted to the surface.

All that being said, Curiosity scientists now believe the bright soil flecks are indeed indigenous to?Mars. They could be minerals that are part of the soil-forming process, Grotzinger said, or reflective surfaces created by the cleaving of ordinary dirt.

The team aims to fire its mineral-identifying laser, which is part of Curiosity's ChemCam instrument, at some of the pieces in the next few days to get a better idea of what they actually are.

Mars under the microscope

Curiosity carries 10 instruments to help it determine whether its?Gale Crater?landing site has ever been capable of supporting microbial life. But CheMin and another instrument on the 1-ton rover's body, known as Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM), are the rover's core scientific gear.

SAM is a chemistry laboratory that can identify organic compounds ? the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it. The instrument has been sniffing the Martian air already, but it has yet to analyze its first soil sample. That should change in a week or so, Grotzinger said, after further cleaning of the rover's sampling system.

Curiosity continues to be in good health, researchers said. After the six-wheeled robot finishes testing out its scooping and sampling systems at Rocknest, mission scientists will begin searching for a spot to break out the rover's rock-boring drill. The first drill activity will be a complicated affair that could take month or so all up, Grotzinger said.

Curiosity is currently checking out deposits near a site called "Glenelg," where three interesting types of Martian terrain come together. But its ultimate destination is the base of Mount Sharp, the 3.4-mile-high (5.5 kilometers) mountain rising from Gale Crater's center.

Mount Sharp's foothills show signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water. Curiosity could be ready to start rolling toward the mountain's interesting deposits ? which lie about 6 miles (10 km) away ? in a couple of months.

"I would hope we'd be on our way by the end of the year," Grotzinger said.

Merkel opens Roma Holocaust memorial in Berlin

Sean Gallup / Getty Images

Messina Weiss, 12 and great grand-daughter of Holocaust survivor Gertrud Rocher, carries a flower past the memorial to the Sinti and Roma in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Germany remembered the Holocaust's forgotten victims on Wednesday by opening a memorial in the heart of Berlin to the 500,000 ethnic Sinti and Roma murdered by the Nazis.

As the mournful strains of a solo violin sounded through the trees, political leaders and frail survivors approached a dark pool close to the German parliament building.

Its still water is intended to evoke tears for the dead but also, in reflecting the beholder, inspire new generations to protect minorities from hate.

"This memorial commemorates a group of victims who, for far too long, received far too little public recognition -- the many hundreds of thousands of Sinti and Roma who were persecuted by the Nazis as so-called gypsies," said German Chancellor Angela Merkel.?"The destiny of every single person murdered in this genocide is one of unspeakable suffering. Every single destiny, fills us, fills me, with sadness and shame."

The memorial was designed by the Israeli artist Dani Karavan, the BBC reported, and a chronology of the Nazis' extermination campaign appears next to the memorial. A fresh flower will be placed on the triangular surface at the center of the reflecting pool every day, the BBC said.

Discrimination against Sinti and Roma increased at alarming levels once Adolf Hitler took power in 1933. They were sent to forced labor camps and, from 1934, subjected to forced sterilization as a result of the Nazis' "racial purity" laws.

Thomas Peter / Reuters

People lay flowers during the dedication of the memorial to the Sinti and Roma in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday.

By the start of World War II, the Nazis' genocidal intent became clear as Sinti and Roma were deported to death camps, where they wore uniforms bearing a "Z" for "Zigeuner" (the German word for "gypsy").

The first time a German leader recognized Nazi persecution of the Roma on racist grounds was in 1982, more than 30 years after West Germany acknowledged the murder of 6 million Jews and began to pay compensation to Israel.

Discrimination today
German politicians and Roma leaders at the opening ceremony described the memorial as a reminder of the urgent need to protect minorities today.

Many of Europe's 12 million Roma face discrimination and social exclusion, often living in dire poverty.

"Half a million Sinti and Roma, men, women and children, were murdered during the Holocaust. Society has learned nothing, next to nothing from this, otherwise they would treat us differently," said Dutch Sinto survivor Zoni Weisz.

His voice faltered as he described how, as a seven-year-old, he watched his father, mother, sisters and brother being deported in a train to Auschwitz concentration camp.

Merkel stressed it was a German and European duty to protect Roma rights. After her speech, a heckler highlighted that Germany refuses to grant asylum to Roma from countries such as Serbia and Macedonia, where they face discrimination.

Romani Rose, leader of the Central Council of Sinti and Roma in Germany, also attended the ceremony.

"Opening the memorial sends an important message to society that anti-Roma sentiment is as unacceptable as anti-Semitism," he told AFP.

Reuters contributed to this report.

WinMetro Beta released: Metro UI for Windows XP, Vista and 7

    Quote:

WfW was 16-bit and Win95 was 32-bit. A substantial technical and performance difference.

That's not the point. The point is that this guy is making it possible to add a feature of Windows 8 that apparently everyone hates, into earlier versions of Windows that don't already have that hated feature, which to me doesn't make any sense. Calmira made Windows 3.1x look like Windows 95, which wasn't hated by everyone, so it made sense to do so.

X Factor Fashion Fail: LOOK! One Direction, Ella Henderson, Union J?s Onesie war!

We love our onesies. There is nothing better than curling up in front of the TV with a cup of hot chocolate and a bag of crisps, while wearing our one piece pjs?honestly, we are onsie addicts. At night. In our own homes. Never, ever in public!

However, it seems this year?s X Factor stars don?t mind wearing their nightwear while they?re out and about and today Ella Henderson and Union J were spotted modelling a variety of babygros as they made their way to rehearsals.

It seems that Ella Henderson has had enough of the Adele comparisons, so instead of her usual sophisticated hairdo and stylish clothes, this morning the 16 year old singer was spotted in her smurf blue onsie, with her long auburn locks hanging down her back and she competed the look with a striped blue and yellow hat.

Union J got in on the look too, or at least half of them did and while George Shelley and JJ looked slick and pretty cool in their normal daywear, Josh and Jaymi teamed their hi tops with some uni zip garments?.we like to imagine they didn?t even wear their pants underneath.

It seems like walking out in onesies has become a bit of an X Factor rite of passage, as not only was Rylan Clark spotted in one last week, but if we remember correctly One Direction had a bit of a penchant for theirs while they were on the ITV show two years ago.

Who do you think rocks the onesie best? Leave your comments below?

Alan Milburn's report represents an opportunity for the university ...

Alan Milburn?s report on Higher Education did not receive the attention Anna Zimdars suggests it deserved. In this post she offers an overview of the report and an initial analysis of its key claims. Among other pertinent aspects, it?places the long neglected issue of postgraduate education at the heart of the widening participation agenda. The report challenges those?within higher education to rethink the purpose of the public university.?

The 18th of October saw the publication of Alan Milburn?s report on Higher Education, ?University Challenge: How Higher Education Can Advance Social Mobility?. This is an important report and I was somewhat disappointed to see it was not the overarching daily top news story despite the good coverage on the Today programme. I certainly have not been so excited about reading something for a long time ? move over, Harry Potter and Twilight.

My own research has concerned admission to the University of Oxford and to the English legal Bar. Against this background, I find much to like in Alan Milburn?s welcome report on university and social mobility. My three report favourites are:

1)????? endorsement of contextual data in undergraduate admission.

    2)????? emphasis on postgraduate study

3)????? reference to regional variations in higher education participation as an area for public policy.

It seems to be the right thing to consider evidence-based information about students? educational context when universities make offers to applicants. Of course, using contextual data requires robust and valid empirical analyses, and the report recognizes this ? another welcome emphasis and good news for social researchers: there is a need to provide a much thicker evidence base for a lot of current policy work in higher education e.g. university outreach initiatives. Might we see the creation of some new jobs in social research or in institutional research? Or is this unfounded optimism?

The detailed report then shows how the rationale or philosophy of entire admissions systems can differ (Chapter 5). Drawing on US research, the report considers how US Ivy league universities embrace the diversity of their student body as a legitimate objective of the learning and student experience they provide, drawing on the work of Harry Brighouse?&?Adam Swift and Tom Espenshade. I would have thought that although the US Ivies are private institutions ? which contrasts with the status of the UK Russell Group ? there is no reason in principle why we could not endorse diversity as an educational objective this side of the Atlantic alongside the use of contextual data. This makes sense for the education experience of students as well as for society (see also Nussbaum). In fact, just this week I asked my new tutees how they had enjoyed their first seminar this year. And, what was the most fun?? The ?variety of experiences of participants? and ?hearing different points of view?. This allows for reflection that aside from the necessary government emphasis on the labour market returns to education, isn?t it priceless to offer an educational experience which can transform an individual?s way of viewing the world? It might seem like a romantic view of education but the business case for diversity is also well developed.

A seminal piece of research which, unfortunately, did not feature in this report, has attempted to capture the social utility of diversity as an admissions criterion and concluded that embracing diversity led to a wide array of social benefits (William Bowen and Derek Bok, 1999: The shape of the river).? I would have thus welcomed an even more radical endorsement of diversity in this report. However for the real policy world of admission, focusing on contextual data and accreditation of prior learning might be a more feasible starting point and is welcome.

Secondly, I am thrilled to see that postgraduate education is moving towards centre-stage in the report. With undergraduate degrees now often being ?necessary but insufficient? conditions for certain career entries, the focus on the interaction of postgraduate study with social background is most welcome ? indeed a ?lack of access to postgraduate study is in danger of becoming a social mobility time bomb? (p. 6).

One of the theoretical issues surrounding postgraduate education implicitly shining through in the report, concerns the unresolved question whether educational opportunities are ?spilling over? or ?deferred selection? takes place. In other words, as we aim towards greater inclusion in undergraduate education, the benign hope is that any increase in opportunities will simply spill over into a more diverse student body at postgraduate level. In this model, graduates then also enjoy the same labour market outcomes regardless of background as their meritocratic credentials spill over into the labour market.

A more malign interpretation is that an era of credential inflation, heightened by a recession, could lead to deferred selection taking place and that all the sorts of things policy interventions attempt to neutralize ? like ability to pay and other factors beyond individuals? control ? matter again for postgraduate entry and entry to certain professions. Milburn highlighted some of these aspects in his Access to Professions report with regards to the role of unpaid internships in accessing some professions. This is an area where there is a need for empirical researchers and theorists to continue developing our understanding and communicating our findings with policy audiences.

Geography is another area where awareness of differences in university access can be a useful step towards redressing them ? ideally when combined with developments in technology enhanced learning.

This segue ways into considering the figurative dog that is not barking ? or not loud enough ? in my view: disability and universality.

Well-designed technology-enhanced learning can benefit learners in different ways, but it can be exceptionally useful for students with disabilities. This is as long as accessibility considerations are an integral part of digital provision. A university-led discourse of diversity and inclusion and an expansion of the implicit notion of the normal students would be welcomed.

Universality covers two aspects: access to universally good schools and universal links between universities and schools. I was pleased to see the first point addressed in the report by stating that ?in an ideal world, all schools would be of a uniformly high standard and universities could simply select students on the basic of actual academic achievement??and that ?sadly, this is not the case.?? (p. 49)? I think it is crucial to remember that making allowances for imperfect educational contexts is the tree.?Good education for all is the wood sometimes missed because of all the trees. Indeed, the UK evidence-base showing support for universally good schools as preferable to a choice plethora of schools with too divergent educational experiences is growing.

Secondly, universality requires consideration when rolling out outreach schemes. Many schemes are due to the nature of the targeted mentoring small scale. But it would seem undesirable to introduce a new dimension of ?inequality of opportunity to outreach opportunities? to the list of inequalities students can encounter.

To conclude, Alan Milburn asks the university sector to step up and take greater responsibility for aspects of social mobility through education.? This is an opportunity for the university sector to take on a leadership role and to rethink and re-imagine aspects of the mission of public universities.

(AP) ? British billionaire Richard Branson says his space tourism project keeps being pushed back and isn't sure of an exact date for the first launch.

He says it will be at least another 12 or 18 months before the Virgin Galactic venture can offer paid space travel to adventurers.

The founder of the Virgin Group met with students on his first visit to Poland on Wednesday, where he came to launch Virgin Academy, which will help young people kick start their own businesses.

Asked about Virgin Galactic, Branson said he has "stopped counting" days to the launch because it gets delayed "to the next year, to the next year."

More than 100 would-be space tourists have signed up for the $200,000 two-hour trips that go 62 miles (100 kilometers) above Earth.

Apple takes on Nexus 7 with iPad Mini

    Android Central

In San Francisco this afternoon Apple revealed a new 7.9-inch iPad Mini, based upon the internals of the iPad 2, to an audience of feverish fans. But from an Android perspective, what's most interesting is the stage time given to Google's $199 Nexus 7, which has already seen success in the small form factor tablet space. The Nexus 7 stayed on screen for several minutes while Apple's Phil Schiller took jabs at the device.

Showing the two tablets side-by-side, the Apple VP played up the iPad Mini's advantages in materials, screen size and tablet app ecosystem. However, Apple didn't venture anywhere near Google's tablet when it came to price -- the cheapest iPad Mini, a 16GB Wifi-only model, is to sell for $329.99 in the U.S.

Google is widely expected to expand its tablet portfolio next week, with a 32GB Nexus 7 and a new Samsung-built 10-incher, with a 2560x1600 display.

Apple also unveiled a fourth-generation retina iPad, along with new MacBook, Mac Mini and iMac computers.

Ryan and Boehner Rally Includes Eyebrow Raising Jokes

DURANGO, Colo.-Speaker John Boehner joined Paul Ryan on the campaign trail here today and told the crowd they originally met when Ryan was a student at Miami University of Ohio when he helped Boehner put up yard signs for his first congressional race.

"Twenty-two years ago, I was running for Congress for the first time. And you know, if they can't say your name, they probably aren't going to vote for you. Look at my name: Beaner. Bonner. Boner," the Speaker of the House joked about his last name.

After making fun of himself, Boehner had only praise for Ryan.

"You're never going to find a more decent person on the face of the earth. Never going to find anyone who's as smart as he is, who knows more about economic policy, knows more about the economy," he said.

When he took the stage in front of over 1,000 people, Ryan threw the joke back at Boehner incorrectly pronouncing his last name as "boner."

"Hey, it's nice to see John Boehner here today isn't it," Ryan said, laughing at the incorrect pronunciation. "It's a true story, but I would put up yard signs as a young guy in college. I had no idea how to pronounce his name. But serving with him for 14-years we kind of figured it out."

Ryan did not mention tonight's final debate between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, but Boehner did, saying Romney will "show the American people the lack of leadership in this White House when it comes to the issue of foreign policy."

Monday night's debate hosted by CBS News' Bob Schieffer will be focused on foreign policy.

The speaker also accused the president of lying to the American people at last week's debate at Hofstra University.

"Last week in that debate, he attempted to mislead the American people about the deaths of four Americans in Libya," Boehner said. "Now, tonight the president has the opportunity to level with the American people, to look the American people in the eye and tell them the truth about what he knew and when he knew it."

Ryan is on the second day of a three day swing in the state. Polls here are in a dead heat with both candidates within the margin of error. He urged the crowd at Fort Lewis College to vote early. Early voting in the state started today.

"We need your help," Ryan said. "We need your votes. Early voting started. Colorado is at the cusp of the battleground states. This state and a handful of other states will determine the future of this country not for four years, but for a generation."

Ryan campaigned outside of a vent and piping factory in Pueblo West earlier Monday and will visit a debate watching party in Grand Junction before watching the face off himself at his hotel. He continues his swing Tuesday evening with a joint event with Mitt Romney in the state, that's after another rally with the top of the ticket outside of Las Vegas.

Mitt could win the popular vote -- and still lose

For Democrats still stinging from the 2000 election?that is to say, any Democrat born before about 1985?2012 could be the year of retribution. There is a distinct possibility that former Gov. Mitt Romney could win the popular vote and still lose the election to President Barack Obama.

In roughly 45 clinical trials, American democracy has produced four presidents who did not win the popular vote: John Quincy Adams in 1824, Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, Benjamin Harrison in 1888 and George W. Bush in 2000. (There have been 56 presidential elections, but popular vote data doesn't exist for the first 10 or so.) The Food and Drug Administration would soundly reject a drug that caused some horrible disfigurement upward of 10 percent of the time, but Americans appear to tolerate a constitution that rewards the overall loser this often. Consensus on the subject is difficult to build. Even though a majority of Americans support abolishing the Electoral College, the present system only punishes one side or the other in a given year.

National polls swung dramatically in Romney's direction after he trounced Obama in the first debate. The odds that Obama will secure re-election under the Signal's model dipped in tandem, but never below about 60 percent. The reason is so familiar that the O, H, and I keys on my keyboards are wearing thin.

Sources: Betfair, Intrade, IEM, HuffPost Pollster and RealClearPolitics

To be clear, we don't necessarily think Romney will win the popular vote. Standing in national polls does not predict actual vote share, and those polls are swinging back in the president's favor. Romney's odds of winning a majority of the ballots, however, are higher than his odds of winning at least 270 electoral votes. This year, the Electoral College unfairly favors Obama: Romney must carry Florida, Virginia and Ohio, while Obama needs only one of them.

The latest Gallup tracking poll of likely national voters has Romney up by 7 points. A lot of virtual ink has been spilled on how and why Gallup's poll has become an outlier: I suggest Alan Abramowitz, Mark Blumenthal or Nate Silver on the subject.?The more meaningful aggregations of polls at?Pollster and RealClearPolitics both report a statistical tie between Obama and Romney in the national polls.

Of the three states Romney needs to win, Florida (80.0 percent likely for Romney) and Virginia (61.9 percent likely for Romney) are leaning in his favor. Ohio has stubbornly remained in Obama's camp, with a 65.0 percent chance of going to Democrats. Obama held firm in the state after his Oct. 3 debate debacle, Ohio's economy is doing relatively well, and early voting is already under way, minimizing the impact of late-breaking events.

Let the pundits tie themselves into knots over the latest Gallup poll. As usual, what America wants is immaterial compared to the desires of the Buckeye State.

You also come away from your Expert Interviews knowing exactly what your Tribe needs and how to deliver it. Experience Increased Confidence and Clarity About Your Expertise. This is another paradox: your brilliance is almost always missed by YOU! It?s so -?tip of your nose? close that you don?t SEE it, because it?s who you are. You often overlook it, because you don?t see it as special or extraordinary. Others can better reflect your mastery. Your Tribe will eagerly share what?s great about you. That, in turn, creates crystal clear confidence in your value and what you offer. Hone Your Authentic Signature Style. One of the key problems that I encountered early on was that I tried to use business models and strategies that didn?t feature my strengths. Some of the models I used actually set me up for failure! It?s not that there was anything wrong with the model; it just didn?t create an environment where my brilliance ? my natural gifts and talents ? could shine. As your confidence and clarity increase, your authentic signature style becomes apparent. It?s not only what you deliver that clients want, it?s who you are! Leverage Your Content. Queue that Expert Interview into an auto-responder and continue to generate income on the very same interview, weeks and months after you?ve hosted it. Repurpose the content into a special report, e-course or video and create additional lead generation. Drive traffic to the opt-in page through social media and JV partners and continue to build your list. List building with Expert Interviews is a strategy that works like gangbusters to grow your business. In reality, you cannot grow your business in a vacuum. It is through the power of partnership that your reach will increase at the speed of light. Keith Ferrazzi says it best: -?You can?t get there alone. In fact, you can?t get very far at all.-? Expert Interviews are a fast track strategy that build authority, increase visibility and position your message powerfully and profitably, while serving your corner of the world.
